The Spark
By Sean | Iron Oak Group
I was five weeks into a six-week business trip. Away from my wife. Away from my kids. Living out of a hotel room with a gym that had dumbbells, a bench, and a cable machine if I was lucky.
I opened my fitness app. It asked me one question:
What split do you want to do today?
That's it. Not "what equipment do you have." Not "what's available to you." Just pick a split. Chest. Back. Legs.
Then it gave me a workout built for a gym I wasn't standing in. Hammer strength machines. Plate-loaded stations. Equipment that didn't exist in my hotel gym.
So I did what I've done for 27 years. I stood there scrolling through my phone trying to find substitute exercises. Googling alternatives. Wasting more time on my phone than actually training.
That night I was reading Rich AF by Vivian Tu. And something clicked that changed everything.
Vivian's Story
Vivian Tu was a trader at J.P. Morgan. Wall Street. The safe path. The prestigious path. And she walked away from it.
She didn't walk away to do nothing. She walked away to help people. She took everything she knew about money and started creating content that made finance understandable for regular people. She built Your Rich BFF. She wrote the book I was holding. She turned her expertise into a business that serves others.
Two things hit me at the same time:
- She left the safe path and built something on her own terms.
- She used what she already knew to help people.
I've been in the gym for 27 years. I've solved the equipment problem for myself a thousand times. Hotel gyms. Home gyms. Base gyms with limited gear. I've always figured it out manually.
Why not build something that does it for everyone?
The Books That Got Me Here
Rich AF was the push into building. But the books before it laid the foundation.
I started reading finance books in February of last year when I pulled my money out of my financial advisor's hands. That decision alone changed my life. But the books kept changing me in ways I didn't expect.
I Will Teach You to Be Rich taught me to leave the advisor and invest in index funds. Stop paying someone else to care less than I do. Build systems. Automate.
The Psychology of Money taught me that wealth is behavior. Patience. Compounding. Time in the market. Not timing the market.
Rich AF taught me to be OK spending on things I love. And that one hit home.
I'm a massive Seahawks fan. I collect memorabilia. When they won the Super Bowl, I spent a lot on merchandise and meeting players for autographs. Before the books, I might have felt guilty about that. Now I don't. Because I know the system is working behind the scenes.
Almost all of my RSUs go straight into my investment fund now. That's money I wasn't investing before I left my financial advisor. I opened an E*Trade account. I built an Excel file so I could see my plan clearly. The important money is put away. So when I spend on what I love, I spend guilt-free.
But Rich AF pushed me further. It wasn't just about managing money anymore. It was about MAKING money from something I love. Something I need in my life. Something that can help others.
That's when IronAI Fitness was born.
That Weekend
I didn't wait. I didn't make a business plan. I didn't spend three months "researching."
That weekend I signed up for Base44. It's a platform that lets you build apps using AI. I had no clue how AI worked. Didn't matter. I started creating. I built an AI agent for the app. I figured out features. I made it work.
Was it perfect? No. But it had the bones. It had the vision. An app that asks you what equipment you have FIRST. Then builds your workout around your reality. No scrolling. No substitutions. No wasted time. Just train.
Then I hit my limit. I could only take it so far on my own. So I did what I've always done. I found help.
Andrew
Base44 had a list of developers you could hire. I scrolled through and found Andrew. Twenty-five dollars an hour. I had no idea what I was getting. I just took the shot.
Best decision I made in this whole process.
Andrew didn't just build what I told him to build. He got invested. This guy started learning about fitness on his own. Started asking me questions. Asked me about female workouts. I pointed him toward some resources and he was off. Running with it. Caring about the product like it was his own.
I didn't plan to become a mentor. But that's what happened. And that's the thing about building something real. The right people show up when you're moving with purpose.
The Things Nobody Tells You
Here's what I didn't think through:
The Apple Developer Account. I signed up before I even contacted Andrew. Thought it would be simple. It's not. Andrew ended up helping me navigate it.
The laptop. My phone and iPad couldn't handle uploading to the Apple Developer Account. So I had to buy a laptop. Didn't budget for that. But you learn as you go.
LegalZoom. I used it to form my LLC. Iron Oak Group. Official. Real.
Tracking every dollar. I started logging all my spending on the app from day one. Every cost. The developer. The laptop. The Apple account. LegalZoom. All of it. Come tax time, I'm writing off every dollar it took to get this business going.
Nobody tells you about this stuff. The unglamorous side of building something. The paperwork. The unexpected costs. The learning curve on things you thought would be easy.
But you figure it out. The same way I've figured out every workout in every under-equipped gym for 27 years. You adapt. You move. You don't quit.
The Total Investment
Let me put it on the table:
All in, I'm tracking to about $9,000 invested in IronAI Fitness. That includes Andrew, the laptop, the Apple Developer Account, LegalZoom, and everything else it took to go from idea to App Store.
Nine thousand dollars. That's my bet on myself.
Some people spend that on a vacation they won't remember in a year. I spent it on a business that could change my life and help thousands of people train smarter.
What My Wife Said
She's always been supportive. That's who she is. When I told her what I was building, there was no hesitation. No "are you sure?" No doubt.
That support matters more than people realize. Building something new is hard enough without fighting resistance at home. I'm lucky. I know that.
The Thread
So here's where we are:
- The finance books taught me to take control of my money.
- Taking control taught me to invest with purpose.
- Investing with purpose freed me to spend on what I love without guilt.
- Rich AF showed me that the next level isn't just managing money. It's making money from something you love that helps others.
- 27 years of gym frustration gave me the problem to solve.
- One hotel gym and one useless app gave me the final push.
- That weekend, I started building.
- Now the app launches next week.
From reading a book in a hotel room to launching a business. That's the spark.
